Pauillac, 2nd wine of Grand-Puy Ducasse 2006
Grape: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot
Style: Medium bodied, soft full red
A fifth growth of some 30 hectares in size, Grand Puy Ducasse is owned by the négociant
firm of Cordier. The vineyard is planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot and
after a traditional fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in oak, 50% of which is new.
Recent years have seen the wines here getting more depth and backbone, possibly as a
result of much needed investment and this, the second wine Prélude, is a notable bargain.

Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Zovo 2007
Grape: 70 % Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 10% Molinara
Style: Full bodied and rich
Characteristics: Made using the ancient appassimento method. The fruit was hand harvested in October, and laid out to dry on bamboo racks, in rooms with good airflow. By the end of March the grapes are raisined having lost 35% of their weight thus increasing the sugar and acid concentration. The grapes were then pressed and fermented in vat, with maceration lasting 30 days, before maturation in old oak barrels for 3 years. Deep ruby coloured, the nose is redolent of raisins, violets, plums and almonds. The palate is full bodied and rich with flavours of drying cherry, mature plum, raspberry and hints of bitter almond, leading to a full and ripe finish.

St Supery Sauvignon Napa Valley California 2008
Grape: 100% Sauvignon
Style: Dry crisp bright intense
St Supéry was created in the 1970’s by French winemaker Robert Skalli and is still owned and run by the family. The estate comprises nearly 700 hectares of prime land in Rutherford and Dollarhide of which only 200 hectares are planted with the classic Bordeaux varieties, particularly Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc. The belief here is in bio-diversity - hence the large amount of land left to lie fallow - and in using natural homemade fertilizers and minimal treatments. All water is recycled and the winery has a Napa Valley Green certification. The Sauvignon is unusually fresh and aromatic, owing
to the higher elevation of the Dollarhide vineyards.

Chateau Talbot St Julien Bordeaux Blanc 2008
Grape: 80% Sauvignon 20% Semillon
Style: Full smooth White
Purchased by the Cordier family in 1917, this 4th growth is now run by the fourth generation to be in charge. One of the largest Cru Classés, there are 107 hectares under vine, with 5 hectares of white varieties, a rare sight in the Médoc. This white wine is made in the manner of white Burgundy, but from 80% Sauvignon and 20% Semillon, all of which is barrel fermented and matured, with regular lees stirring giving a lovely amount of balanced oak. This is one of the finest white wines in Bordeaux and remains very good value considering the quality.
